Pros

  • Simple and easy to use
  • Doesn't consume a lot of hard drive space or memory
  • Presents information useful in a wide variety of applications

Cons

  • Does not display CPU or GPU temperature

Long ago computers were fairly straightforward. There were only two different types of CPUs (Central Processing Units) on the market. CPUs were of the 6502 type or the 8086 type. However, since those days the CPU market has become far more competitive and active. Faster CPUs are being released by several different manufacturers, each with their own set of specifications.

Hardware Identification Becomes Easier

This is where CPU-Z comes into the picture. CPU-Z is a simple tool that gathers information on CPU and motherboard hardware. Novice PC users will have an easier time identifying their CPU and motherboard to technical support representatives without having to open the tower, while hardcore PC enthusiasts can receive information about the type of CPU they need for an upgrade, overclocking their CPU and performing various other hardware diagnostics.

Ease of Use - 5/5

CPU-Z is extremely simple to use. Opening the program displays detailed information such as CPU and motherboard type, L2 cache, CPU speed, motherboard socket data, and much more. If you're the competitive type, having problems with your computer, or simply want to know how to get the most out of your hardware, you can output your data to an HTML or text document which can easily be shared online so more experienced people can help you with whatever problem you're having.

Interface - 5/5

The information is displayed in a simple, easy-to-read interface that's beautifully organized into sections without unnecessarily cluttering the interface. Each section displays different types of data. Even a beginner will be able to use the interface with relative ease.

Features - 4/5

I found all of CPU-Z's features to be extremely useful. Of particular interest is the benchmarking tool, which allows you to view how your CPU stands against a wide range of other CPUs. This gives you the ability to select a CPU in your price range that will give you the biggest speed boost. However, I did not see anything in this program that displays CPU and GPU temperature. This is vital information to have when overclocking. Therefore, I cannot give CPU-Z a perfect score in this department.

Final Verdict

CPU-Z is a nifty little program that doesn't pack in a lot of unnecessary features. The program is simple, easy to use, and doesn't take up a lot of resources while running - exactly what we look for in a tool like this. If you're interested in a tool that gets down to it this program is for you. As of this writing, the current version is 1.78.1.
